Bardsey Island (Ynys Enlli) Day Trips – Llŷn Peninsula North Wales
Bardsey Island (Ynys Enlli — 'Island in the Tides') — remote North Welsh island off the tip of the Llŷn Peninsula. Run by the Evans family — local lobster fishermen for generations. 20,000 saints said to be buried here; the island was a major medieval pilgrimage site. Now owned by Bardsey Island Trust (since 1977). Bird Observatory on island (Bardsey Bird and Field Observatory) operating since 1953. Wildlife: 8 breeding chough pairs (winter flocks to 50); growing puffin colony (10 pairs in 2005 → 60+ now); 200+ grey seal haul-outs; 30 seal pups born each autumn; Manx shearwaters; rare migrants (island strategic position in Irish Sea). Ben Porter — award-winning wildlife photographer and Discover Wildlife contributor — grew up on the island and is the definitive authority on its wildlife. Ferries from Porth Meudwy and Pwllheli. Treacherous tides — crossings only in suitable weather.
