Western Capercaillie Photography – Central European Breeding Centre Gorski Kotar (ONLY operator in Croatia)

The Capercaillie Association for the Protection of Animals runs the Central European International Breeding Centre for Capercaillie in Gorski Kotar — the ONLY place in Croatia where capercaillie photography tours are offered. PhD Ivica Križ built the €800,000 project without EU funds or bank loans between 2014-2019, with support from Croatian Forests, HEP, Croatian Hunting Association, and local government. Opened July 27 2019. 72x72mx4-8m aviary at 1000m asl in autochthonous capercaillie forest. Cooperates with Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Faculty of Forestry of University of Zagreb and the Ministry of Environment. Only 10 active capercaillie singers remain in all of Croatia — this is one of Europe's most endangered bird populations. Photography season: 15 March to June (lek display + hatching).
